For a local business with 10 or more reviews, the median Google rating is 4.7. 4.9 or better is top quarter; under 4.4 is bottom quarter. It varies by trade.

Key findings

Across 696,321 U.S. local businesses in our directory with 10 or more Google reviews, the median rating is 4.7 stars.
A 4.9 or higher puts a business in the top quarter; below 4.4 is the bottom quarter. A 4.5 is slightly below the typical local business.
40.7% of businesses with a perfect 5.0 rating have fewer than 5 reviews. A perfect score with a handful of reviews tells you very little.
23.5% of businesses with 10 or more reviews hold a perfect 5.0.
The bar is highest for home inspectors (median 5.0), junk removal and hauling (median 5.0) and pressure washing and exterior cleaning (median 5.0), and lowest for restaurants (median 4.3), waste management (median 4.4) and pool contractors (median 4.5).

What is a good Google rating for a business?

For a local business with 10 or more reviews, the median Google rating is 4.7. 4.9 or higher is top quarter; below 4.4 is bottom quarter. The bar differs by trade, so compare a business with others in the same line of work (Page One Partner Research, September 2026).

Is a 4.5-star rating good?

It is acceptable but slightly below average: the median local business with 10+ Google reviews is rated 4.7, and a quarter score below 4.4. For trades where most businesses rate higher, a 4.5 sits nearer the bottom (Page One Partner Research, September 2026).

Can you trust a perfect 5-star rating?

Only with enough reviews behind it. 40.7% of local businesses with a perfect 5.0 have fewer than 5 reviews. A 4.8 from 200 reviews tells you more than a 5.0 from 3 (Page One Partner Research, September 2026).

How many reviews should a business have?

It depends heavily on the trade: see the median and top-quarter review counts for each trade in the table. In general, a business with fewer reviews than the median for its trade has less of a track record to judge.

What Google rating should I look for when hiring a contractor?

Look for a rating at or above the median for that trade, backed by at least as many reviews as the trade's median, and read the most recent low reviews. Each trade's page below gives the exact lines.

Methodology

How we measured it

Scope: every figure here describes businesses listed in the Page One Partner directory, not every business in the United States. Counts are businesses in our directory, not totals for a trade, state or city; percentages and benchmarks describe our listings and can differ from the whole market.

Source: the Page One Partner directory, 1,716,114 U.S. local service business listings (all 50 states and Washington, D.C.), each built from the business's public Google Business Profile and public business records. Listings held back by our quality checks (a phone number from another state, a map pin far from the stated city, a Google match that belonged to a different business) are excluded.

Trades: each business is filed under one trade from its Google category. Only trades with at least 1,000 listings are reported, and rating figures use trades with at least 200 businesses carrying 10 or more reviews.

Percentiles are computed over businesses with 10 or more Google reviews in each trade: the bottom-quarter line is the 25th percentile, the median the 50th, the top-quarter line the 75th and the top-10% line the 90th. Review-count benchmarks use every business with at least one review. Google shows ratings to one decimal place, so many businesses share each value.

Figures are aggregates. Page One Partner does not publish business-level rows from this research. The aggregate tables are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0: credit "Page One Partner Research" with a link to the study.

Recomputed weekly from the live directory; this edition was computed in September 2026. Small shifts between editions are expected as businesses are added and ratings change.
